This rare and exceptional antique insect brooch has been expertly crafted in 14ct yellow gold, modelled as a three-dimensional grasshopper.
The grasshopper’s body and wings are intricately detailed, adorned with a variety of bead motifs that are framed by swirling gold borders, effectively mimicking the textures found in the insect’s natural anatomy. Its compound eyes are depicted by two collet-set cabochon turquoise gemstones, weighing a total of 0.06 carats, which provide a vibrant contrast and splash of colour.
The thorax and abdomen are each adorned with an Old European cut diamond, four-claw set for secure presentation. Additional yellow gold detailing forms the legs, complete with pierced decoration to the hind femur, enhancing the lifelike appearance. Even the underside of the brooch features wirework-style ornamentation, replicating the grasshopper’s spiracles with remarkable attention to detail.
This unusual antique brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and hook clasp and bears the French import mark for 14ct gold (St Jacques shell with central ‘a’).
